ABOUT THIS PRACTICE Players learn about spacing and supporting teammates. Triangle drills encourage players to practice passing and moving in small spaces. Players learn to create good supporting angles and passing lanes. Zonal drills force players to survey the field and put themselves in the best possible position to move the ball and score. Through lateral and vertical movement on the field, players become familiar with spacing on the field.
SOCCER CONTEXT Positioning can be a difficult concept to teach kids. But for a team to function as a cohesive unit then players need to understand the freedoms and limits of their positions on the field. Players need to learn when to show for support and when to make runs to open up the field. Teams that have disciplined positioning and good spacing can attack and defend more easily than disorganized teams. |
