SOCCER CONTEXT The most popular formation worldwide is the 4-4-2. It consists of four defenders, four midfielders, two strikers, and a goalie. This structure provides stability and balance from back to front and side to side. In a 4-4-2, the flanks, or the areas along the wings near the endline, become dangerous areas from which to attack. Coaches often consider this formation one of the easier ones to teach because players have simple and defined roles. However, these roles can differ depending on a team's offensive or defensive strategy. |
